- Give praise and encouragement openly and without
reservation.
- Be consistent with discipline.
- Use media such as movies, CD's and television shows as
conversation starters.
- Involve your child as much as possible in making family
rules and decisions.
- Be a good role model for your child.
- Read to your child everyday or let him or her read to
you.
- Discuss your family's values and why you have them.
- Talk with your child about risky behaviors as soon as
possible, such as those involving alcohol, tobacco, drugs
and sexuality. Be open, honest and approachable.
